Groundworks is a term used to describe all the work done to prepare the sub-surfaces which allows construction work to begin.

This is an investigation of the previous uses of the site, its stability and will identify any potential problems or hazards. A complete assessment of the ground conditions and data collected enables an effective design process to be carried out.
To establish the footprint of the new structure the site will need to be cleared and topsoil taken up. The site may need to be levelled and retaining walls constructed.
Substructure and Ground Stabilisation
Substructure comprises everything below the lowest floor of the new building, including the foundations and damp proof membrane. Ground stabilisation usually means the building of retaining walls but can also include other methods such as the use of soil nails and ground anchors.
The site services may include temporary or permanent drainage and the connection of utilities such as gas, electric and water supplies.
Once completed landscaping of the area around a building can be done, including any surfacing such as laying tarmac or paving.
